Korean Tiger Day at the Library
29 AUGUST
Tigers can be encountered in Korean folk tales, traditional art and contemporary picture books. They can be fierce or funny, hungry or well-natured; they live in the mountains, ride buses and even show up at waterfalls made of cold noodles.
This Saturday, Busan Metropolitan City Library comes to the library for a special programme. Join us for readings in Korean, a Korean bookmaking workshop and a chance to create miniature musical instruments.
PROGRAM
Korean Book Club Ages 6+
We will read two short stories in which the tiger, a familiar figure from ancient Korean tales, finds itself in modern-day Korea among city buses and bowls of cold noodles.
In Kim Ji-an’s Tiger Noodles, three friends set off in search of ice that never melts and discover a waterfall of cold naengmyeon noodles — and a family of tigers. In Kook Ji-seung’s Dad and the Tiger Bus, a father and daughter miss their stop and unexpectedly find themselves in a forest full of animals, right in the middle of a tiger’s wedding.
Korean Bookmaking Workshop Ages 6+
Oseonjang is a traditional Korean bookbinding technique in which the pages are hand-sewn with thread along the spine. During the workshop, each participant will make a small book, decorate it with patterns inspired by najeon mother-of-pearl inlay, and add letters from Hangeul, the Korean alphabet.
Taepyeongso Workshop Ages 6+
The taepyeongso is a traditional Korean wind instrument with a powerful, piercing sound that can be heard from afar. It was traditionally played during festive processions, ceremonies and musical performances. We will explore how the taepyeongso is made and create a miniature paper version, assembling its distinctive shape and decorating it with patterns.
Places are limited. Please register in advance.
